In October 2010, we brought eight people with eight different illnesses deep into the Amazon Rainforest to work with native medicine men for 30 days. We had over 400 applications from people around the world, each desperate to find an answer to their illness. The selection process was grueling, but we eventually made our decisions and embarked on what would become the adventure of a lifetime. Best of all, we had a world class documentary film crew capture the entire journey!

FAT PADDLER’S STORY

As a hard-playing rugby forward, Sean was used to putting his body on the line. That soon changed when severe motor-vehicle accidents left him with devastating physical injuries. Sean soon found himself fighting a losing battle against obesity and an ongoing struggle with depression. To aid his recovery, he took up kayaking and decided to tackle one of the toughest paddling competitions in the world: the 111-kilometre Hawkesbury Canoe Classic. His many hours training in Sydney and a trip to Alaska paddling amongst icebergs and running from bears fuelled a new appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors and recaptured his enthusiasm for living. Sean’s story is an uplifting experience for those looking for motivation to regain their fitness and enjoy life to the full. Book available here

At One With Nature

30/08/2012

You can't win a gold medal or anything for that matter, disconnected from nature. We can play games, try hard, work hard and have occasional victories and even be determined but if we are disconnected from nature we will not win.

There are no short cuts. Every road has its bumps and it's when we hit those bumps that being one with nature makes the difference. If we are disconnected we change tracks - but if we are at one with nature, we learn instead and then continue.

It's all too easy to blame the job, the boss, your company, your partner, your kids for crappy work life balance, but that is a ridiculous notion and doesn't fix anything.

Nobody does more to you than you do to yourself

In nature everything is connected. Rocks, trees, birds, oceans and people. Partitions are visible because there are different shapes, but really, it's all one harmonious interconnected thing. Human beings think we are separate. That's the gift and curse of free will. But we are not separate.

Someone said to me "people don't like me" and I simply ask "how much do you like you? Do you judge and criticise yourself for being unique or different?" In prison to punish people who are already being punished they use solitary confinement. In Nepal, when a monk has achieved the highest of standards in their VIP - they are rewarded with 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days in solitary confinement. What's the difference? Monks learn to love the Buddha within... people in prison, don't like themselves at all. That's usually why they end up in prison.

Maybe a great place to start in corporate team-building and leadership is to help individuals like themselves more rather than motivational speeches that try to encourage them to be someone they are not!

If you compare the behaviour of a tree to the behaviour of most people you'll be shocked to find that trees are smarter than most people.

Reason 1. Trees grow toward the sun.
Trees know what they want, where to get it and just go do it. Humans on the other hand get into all sorts of bother, most don't know where they are going or why. Trees Win.

Reason 2. Trees put down roots.
Trees don't have false expectations. Trees know there are going to be storms and they know that the deeper their roots the more they grow toward the sun, and the happier they are. Humans on the other hand talk about what should and shouldn't happen and can't work out why they plateau in life. They just work harder and blame life/others instead. Trees Win.

When we search for reasons for one person being a better performer in life than another we often gravitate to the technical skill level. Oh, he's a great guitar player or, oh, she's an amazing voice. But really, is that the reason they are great or is it a byproduct of being great.

A successful person knows they are special long before anybody else does.

My old yoga teacher took 60 years to increase his classes from 10 people to 20. He knew his destiny long before the millions arrived. That's why he persisted in practicing for 60 years.

Sometimes we get certainty at all the wrong places. We get certainty about analysis, about ownership, about being right, about control, position and authority. But that's not what makes a great person great.

Certainty, to a person who thinks too much isn't really certainty. It's just knowing stuff. I met allot of people who can recite the bible or the dharma but have no certainty. They only have addiction and repetitive parrot syndrome. Ie if it's written in a book, and enough people agree, it must be true. That's not certainty and doesn't make great people. It makes compliant and unwell, righteous people.

Up in the higher reaches of the human brain is a place we call soul, heart and love. It's a great space, we know it well. That's where certainty comes from. And it only relates to our purpose not our vision. We might be born to sing, but how, when, where? that's another journey.. Certainty comes with clarity of purpose and the rest is a best guess. Be clear with your intention... and have certainty of purpose.
