Optimists are really pessimists in disguise. Pessimists have an optimism the world can't live up to. Realists are limited by the reality they can touch. Happiness - real happiness is one step beyond all those models that seem to run our society and the results prove, they don't work. See why here in this great article.
The Optimist
Here’s a model of what the ego wants life to look like when the bottom online is neutral and the top of the curve is as happy as you can be. In this model life goes from neutral to happy and back to neutral again and the ego’s job is to put in stoppers to prevent us going below the line. I.e. Unhappiness.
The ego will do everything it can to prevent unhappiness; take drugs, lie, cheat, be successful, win at all costs, make money and stay in a relationship that doesn’t work. Below that line, the baseline which we can call ground Zero there is a dark world that people do not want to visit under any circumstances.
Unfortunately from time to time the substitutes fail and we get pushed into that dark side to witness the reality below the line. An infinite array of circumstances can push us there but irrespective of the trigger the darkness is the same, unhappiness we can call it unhappiness.
Unhappiness, below the line is like diving into ice-cold water, we just rush to get out as quickly as possible and warm ourselves up again. The warming process are infinite in variety ranging from secret lovers to drugs and even spirituality. When we are unhappy anything seems better and we’ll do whatever it takes to get on back onto the top side of that baseline. That’s the job of the ego.

The Pessimist
Sometimes we slip below the line. Under these circumstances unhappiness becomes a daily habit. No longer is the ego capable of pushing us back above the line everything seems heavy and we interpret the world as a threatening place. Under these circumstances we become self obsessive taking things personally, worry, sleeplessness and continually struggling with health. We may give lip service to all the good things in the world but deep down we emphasise the darkness and feel a continual struggle to get our head above water.

Here we become aggressive and defensive. Rather than using substitutes to escape from below the line we use substitutes to make it comfortable to stay there. This is the unfortunate mindset of many people who are resigned to being disempowered and disappointed. Anger and frustration are common in this state.
Most often you can see “the fallen” through through addictive habits and the loss of the sparkle in their eyes. Youthfulness disappears and a resignation and hopelessness appears. This can be changed but most often it’s very difficult because like a turtle withdrawing into its shell for safety these people find it hard to be open to change.

The Realist
The realist recognises that life has its ups and downs and that happiness and unhappiness at 2 friends in a balance of flux. The realist realises that the elation (upside) creates depression (downside) and that infatuation (upside) creates resentment (downside).
The realist repeats often that there is 2 sides to everything and that for every up is down. The realist thinks that life is a single plain of activity and that the only reality is the reality we witness. This is a far healthier perspective than either the optimist or the pessimist.
The problem with this model is that it corresponds to a timeline that is not real. For example it suggests that something good today will cause something bad tomorrow or that an upside we experience right now has a downside at some later time. This is not accurate although it is more accurate than optimism or pessimism both of which are blindsided.

Natures law
Taking the perspective of the optimist, the pessimist, and the realist and adding a single important ingredient we arrive at the laws of nature. This perspective demonstrates that in any moment of time for every upside there is a corresponding downside, for every benefit there is a corresponding drawback, for every upper there is a corresponding downer. This is instantaneous recognition that crisis is a blessing.
This perspective requires detachment. Attachment causes perspectives to be skewed in either direct the direction of positive perspective or negative. If we step far enough away from something we will see 2 sides to it instantaneously: there is no time delay.
The realist will say that there is Karma, or future consequences for doing either good or bad deeds. This may or may not be true however, what we do know from the laws of nature is that for every good deed there is instantaneously something negative resulting. The perception of good and bad in itself is distortion.
To understand is fully we might look at falling in love or being inspired in our work. When we fall in love we are not saying there is good or bad in somebody we are past that level. When we are inspired in our work we are not saying we’re doing good or bad work we are simply doing it. This state of being transcends the ego and the mind state which would split things into pessimistic, optimistic or realistic.
Another way of putting this is to say that there is order in the chaos in any moment of time. That means that there is a local perception (call this realistic because we can see it) and nonlocal perception (call this energetic because we can’t see it) and they are both happening simultaneously. So while we might think out tasks, thoughts, actions, achievements and feelings have either positive or negative spin to them in reality they have both. The differences one we can perceive tangibly the other we cannot.
In ancient writings about the laws of nature this was called the cosmic giggle. That our ego thinks there is good and bad but in reality there are both always. Every time we have an emotional reaction to a situation we reveal our unconsciousness about it.

One step further
Although I would love to stop now and rest in the discussion above there is one more important insight that may help you translate this information into everyday life. That translation revolves around the awareness that every moment in time includes the impact of the last moment and the future impact of the next moment. So in reality a moment of time, the space between the past and the future is infinite and as you’ll know from your high school physics class the infinite cannot be reached. Therefore, the present is an illusion.
It goes like this if you keep breaking down the present moment from minutes to seconds to Millie seconds to thousandths of millions of a second, you will never ever find the present you will just keep dividing time into smaller and smaller intervals but it will never stop being divided. In recent science there has begun the search for the God particle. The God particle is the infinite division of time down to the finite. What would be the smallest fraction of all things? If you find it please let me know because this is where the infinite and the finite meet and where local and nonlocal realities are the same: Enlightenment.
Does this make any real difference? I think it does because what it creates is absolute certainty that you will forever have uncertainty about any decision you ever make and that the only real truth you can live by is what is in your heart. Any measure outside of that of right or wrong, good or bad, happy or sad, best or worst is simply an illusion created by either spinning information to be optimistic or pessimistic when in reality, to the most finite degree is both.
To relax and really know that there is no answer, no real why is a profound gift that usually takes sages a lifetime to discover that has taken you 10 min to read about and possibly a few hours to digest.
