A Pilgrimage of the Heart. A journey within and without to the Nepal Himalayas

All who go to the Himalayas of Nepal enjoy it. As a guide I can show people mountains, but as a teacher my purpose is to help people make that giant steps in wisdom as well.  So, the journey is for everyone, but for those looking to take the opportunity to learn and grow, it's even more exceptional.

Are you fit enough? The planning for a trip in Nepal takes a few months and during this time you get really inspired by the opportunity. Of course, the fitter you are for walking hills, the more you'll love the trip.

After your read this, close your eyes and try to imagine yourself as a mountain. Your base deeply merged with the core of the earth, your snow capped peak, reaching for God. Your soul, deeply woven into the fabric of your great mass. Ancient, yet, forever changing. Become the mountains, become one, and then loose yourself.

About the time of the year in Nepal

November and December are winter treks and quite cold but sensational vistas.

May June are monsoon treks and can get wet but it's festival time and warm.

June is Dumji time is one of the most beautiful seasons in Nepal. It is a time of celebration and dance. You'll be welcomed and the festivities are wonderful sacred and special. Our trek takes us to Gokyo lakes before the festival so we can freely join the groups and parties.

The mountains are sacred, huge eagles circle overhead, woolly mountain goats watch us from far above, snow leapards remain hidden from in their lair, giant yaks just turn and wonder at our pilgrimage and the Spiritual Pitbull (alias Chris Walker) guides you to experience the real divinity that exists within your heart and the mountains.

Sherpa people say Tashi Deli (hello), children play with dusty toys, monks chant and give their blessings, prayer flags wave to us. We are on our way in this vast panorama that stretches out before us, the foothills of the Himalayas, home of Mt Everest. The trail is tough physically but mostly mentally as Chris confronts the limitations  that keep you from experiencing the stillness that is at the core of your being.

Our aim is to not only reach the summit of Goyko Re and the Sacred Lakes of the Himalayas but to also reach the summit of a consciousness that we can take down with us and live with us for the rest of our lives. They say you can take the person out of the Himalaya but you can't take the Himalaya ( once you have been with Chris) out of the person.

Gear and preparation
Please do not underestimate the need for preparation for this trip, regardless of your age. It is a serious commitment. Each day involves 5-8 hours of walking, and even at sea level in perfect weather this can be testing. Add altitude, weather changes, food shifts, and a bumpy path and you can understand that the more you prepare, the more fun you'll have.

This trip is of medium difficulty and is suitable for people of all ages. Altitudes range from Kathmandu at 1500 meters to Gokyo Re at 5400 meters. The real challenge is acclimatisation and we are very caring about making sure you are personally cared for in this regard. Diamox is available for those who want extra precautions. Fitness is tested due to altitude and trails. There is a training guide and gear list at the base of this page for download.

Preparation needs to consider. Carrying at least 5kg in a small pack. Wearing boots (these must be well worn in before the trek) and aerobic demand of at least 50% of the available oxygen at sea level. In other words you need to train where you are just out of breath. Jogging or walking fast. You need to be puffing.

Gear is available in Kathmandu for a fraction of Western prices. You can buy everything in Kathmandu however, things like underwear, breathable rain jacket are not reliable. We don't recommend spending huge amounts on gear if you do not plan to trek in the future. Boots and technical sox are good investments back home. Boots should be above ankle.

The Package

  • Side trips to amazing secret places off the main trail - optional.
  • Food, accommodation, guides, safety, guidance, support, sleeping bag, down jacket.
  • Personal Coaching if requested
  • Daily teachings
  • Everything included. Except the walking
  • 100% safety record for nearly 24 years - more than 200 guests
  • Intimate knowledge of the Area. Not limited to tourist routes.

Our porters carry our gear. Friendly people, they seem to be able to carry more than their own weight without a breath. Coffee and tea, a hearty breakfast and another altitude gain of 500 meters. We'll climb that ridge and get a few photo's before we finish the day, down in another warm lodge.

Thoughts and laughter exchange themselves. Our busy mind slows and as it does the joy just bubbles out. We are at peace way up here amongst the clouds, no, above the clouds. 22,000 feet high. Air is thin, thoughts rare, hearts open, blood pumping, air is fresh and cold and we are alive, on the way to heaven and back.

If you are thinking - How to I take my life deeper, more meaning, more joy and vitality and more love than ever before, then consider this program in the high himalayas as a great step toward these discoveries. It changed my busy life.

“The world is full of beauty. I experienced this in absolute awe when sitting in monasteries upon Himalayan skies. To observe the simple practices by Buddhist monks filling up and emptying golden bowls of precious water against the morning and evening sun revealed to me the real purpose of my own life. Grace, Integrity and Beauty. This simple act performed at the same time every day demonstrated to me such mindfulness and respect for our creation. Coming from a world where sacred rituals and practices are not as elegant, I was confronted by it’s absolute beauty. Although in my heart since birth, the purpose for my existence was crystallized at Namche Bazaar. For those of you who are considering this trek with Chris, take a risk and step outside your comfort zone and do it.”

“Nepal is truly one of the most magnificent places on this earth. Trekking through it¹s mountains will take you to a place deep within that will make your spirit soar and cry and laugh. Thank you Christopher Walker for reaching out to me and inspiring me to climb. I am forever grateful for you and the beauty in this world. Namaste.”

“An amazing journey the program focus will be Self Mastery and Global change. Can you imagine a program based on principles of human potential, a futuristic approach to personal mastery set amongst the diversity of a people steeped in spiritual and cultural ritual? You will be guided by the worlds best, you will have the opportunity to individually explore all seven areas of life as well as enjoying a multinational group dynamic with a common mission. The seminar/conference takes place at during the day and as informally as possible.”

The Magic
You will meet monks, and families, children and Tibetan traders, you will meet Sherpas who have climbed Everest several times, porters whose lives are spent walking up and down mountains carrying tourist supplies. The air is fresh and full of vitality but starved of oxygen, your lungs will adapt and your fitness transform.

You will loose weight, the effort so high in these lands is a guarantee, you’ll meet weather conditions from hottest sun to coolest snow, we are in the Himalayas, all is expected and all is celebrated.

You will not be exposed to extreme climbing conditions. We a re after all a seminar company and personal development is our focus, so crampons, ropes and climbing axes are not part of your program.

Accommodation
During the trek, each night will be spent in authentic Nepalese tea houses that range in quality from the sublime to the ridiculous (the latter being in the remoter areas).

What to expect

This trek is considered at a moderate to high level of physical demand and is suitable for all moderately healthy people aged from 12 years to 70. The trail is considered good but there are rocky sections where mindfulness is required. There is no altitude exposure or need for hand scramble or ropes at any time. The level of difficulty is low, the level of altitude and weather is higher. Please note if you are over 50 or over weight a medical check up is advised.

Accommodation in the mountains on this trek is tea house, lodge. Here the lounges are heated and comfortable with great food, magnificent vistas and immersion in Sherpa life. Bedrooms are simple but safe. Share accommodation is usually recommended.

Altitude affects different people in different ways. Although we take all precautions and experienced paths to high levels, we are conscious of the need to monitor oxygenation. For the extremely nervous we can hire oxygen bottles and these can spontaneously arrest any breathing difficulties an individual may have during acclimatization.

Chris Walker leads the group and may, if necessary determine that an individual is putting themselves in danger, ascending further. At least 50 % of trekkers are advised to take alternative routes to enjoy the mountains rather than ascend them. This is a preventative measure and is usually mutually agreed. So, please acknowledge that you are in safe hands and that summiting higher realms might not always be practical.

Food and water along the way is great. The most risk is in Kathmandu itself.

An inspirational journey to the Top of The World.

Please enjoy the Short Film

- If you are on a slow server, it may take a few minutes to load.

Looking for an inspirational break with a difference? You get a great connection to the magnificence of the tallest and most sacred mountains on Earth. You get to experience the perfection of stillness, a perspective far above the mundane crunch of everyday life, an experience that welcomes the future with a brand new mindset.

Trips take 14-16 days depending on time availability. Preparation takes about 2 months. Shopping for gear is done in Nepal with the exception of boots. The route has   no “cliff or ice exposure.” The trek route goes to the two highest trekking peaks in the world and we get off the trail often to visit hidden monasteries, meditation caves and sacred places. On average people loose 5-7 kg and gain a huge leap in personal health. Altitudes excess 5,000meters and therefore we are required to monitor wellbeing along the way keeping a close check on acclimatization.

We are on our way in this vast panorama that stretches out before us, the foothills of the Himalayas, home of Mt Everest.  We are ascending each day, a little more, careful to acclimatise. Our nights have been shared around the lodge fire, reading, eating, getting ready for a long nights sleep. Snuggled in our sleeping bags, inside our small room, the moonlight feels like day. The snow capped mountains silhouette the starlit sky.

General Description

Before and after the trek, we explore the sights and sounds of Katmandu's wonder: World Heritage Sites: Buddhist shrine 'Bhaudhanath' and Hindu temple 'Pashupatinath' (to witness the Hindu public cremation on the bank of holy Bagmati river) before taking an exciting mountain flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Nepal Everest region trekking.

On the way, we stay in lodges under the shadow of the Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Thamaserku peaks in our journey to (either Gokyo or Everest base camp and Kalapathar); selected among the world's top 20 classic Journeys of Lifetime by the Observer, UK. We enjoy good food and traditional Sherpa hospitality. With time for acclimatisation rest days on the way up we walk on relaxed pace below the incredible snow capped peaks, through the beautiful forest and Himalayan Sherpa settlements.

The path to Everest base camp we follow the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche, the Sherpa"capital" nestled in a horse shoe bowl, with it's colorful and bustling market with traders from local villages and as far away as Tibet. The alpine scenery becomes more rugged as we trek above the tree line to reach Dingboche for further acclimatising and exploration. Following the Khumbu glacier moraines we head to Gorak Shep via Lobuche. We trek the summit of Kalapathar (5445m), the best vantage point on earth for the stunning views of 360-degree Himalayas panorama including the world's highest peak Mount Everest in our adventure holiday Everest base camp trip.

From Australia to Katmandu is a short flight through Singapore or BK and you can choose your dates.

Sherpa Adventure will pick you up at the airport and get you up to the mountains. I'm even going to extend the offer to one of your friends.
